Why ventilation matters…
Like all of nature’s elements, air is often taken for granted. We breathe it continuously, rarely considering the quality of what enters or exits our lungs. For most healthy individuals, the air surrounding us—enveloping our bodies and reaching deep into our organs and tissues—has little noticeable effect on our wellbeing. However, during times of illness, particularly when we require care in a healthcare setting, we may become more vulnerable to environmental factors that can pose additional health risks if not properly managed.
In this context, ventilation systems within healthcare buildings must be ‘fit for purpose’. Effective ventilation is vital not only for best practice in infection prevention but also for maintaining patient safety. Inadequate compliance with relevant performance, efficiency, and sustainability standards can impair ventilation function, potentially leading to increased infection risk and even cancelled surgical procedures.
Validation and verification processes should go beyond a simple ‘tick box’ approach. They must provide detailed, accurate information to those responsible for the safe operation and ongoing maintenance of ventilation equipment, ensuring that all systems perform reliably and as intended.
Increased health risks to patients will occur if ventilation systems do not achieve and maintain the required standards. The link between surgical site infection and theatre air quality has been well established. Get in touch
If the ventilation plant has been installed to dilute or contain harmful substances, its failure may expose people to unacceptable levels of contamination. Proven breaches of the statutory requirements can result in prosecution and may also give rise to a civil suit against the operators. Contact us today
